Hello everyone, I am planning on driving up to South Dakota and back for a trip to Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands National Park and I was curious if any of you have ever driven 385 from Amarillo, TX to Hill City, South Dakota? Looking at the satellite imagery it seems to be a fairly straight path up there. Have any of you made this drive on that highway, and if so, is there anything off of it worth checking out? I will be traveling in my SUV and Travel Trailer that way in the Spring.

Thanks in advance for you recommendations.

I think you'll find roads differ dramatically depending on which state is maintaining them.

Texas does a very good job, Oklahoma is horrible, Colorado does a poor job.

I wouldn't pigeon hole myself with 1 road. Taking 287 up to Boise City is much better than 385 to Boise City.

Last August, drove from I-70, South on US385, US287, & Rt. 87 to Amarillo Tx.
Roads were mostly 2 lane, but, most of it was wide lanes & good shoulders. A fair amount of truck traffic, but overall a pretty good trip.
We have a 38' Newmar Canyon Star, & tow a 2017 GMC Terrain! A fabulous trip!
Good Luck!
