I have a 2020 Toyota Tundra (with tow package). We’re looking to get the Lance 2185. After some reading, I’m concerned about the hitch weight. I’ve read that the hitch weight should be 10-15% of the trailer weight. This one comes in at 17% (755/4,565). My other concern is that my Tundra is rated to tow 9,800 with ~10% on the hitch. With the trailer’s 755-lb hitch weight, am I already too close to my max towable?

I can't give you any advice on the tundra, but I'm attaching a spread sheet that you can fill in the numbers on your truck and trailer and it will let you know if you're within your towing capabilities. It was given to me by a member (home away rv) of the ram forum and I have found it to be priceless as I shop for a travel trailer. Good luck!

Just so you know. After much research on towing capacity etc. I learned that you will run out of payload capacity before you run out of towing capacity. Your hitch weight, passengers and anything you have in your truck are considered payload. For example, my 2021 ram 1500 has a payload of 1322lbs. So if my hitch weight is 650lbs, my wife and I are 400lbs, then I have 272lbs of payload left. I hope this helps.

thank you. actually came across a guy on the Facebook Lance forum who has towed a Lance 2185 with the same truck plus a camper shell for over a year and has no problems. crossing my fingers.

This is my opinion only, so take it for what it is worth. First, you are basing your tongue weight on the unloaded weight of the trailer. The only time that trailer is going to be empty is when you bring it home. You should calculate tongue weight on the GVWR of the trailer. In this case 7000 lbs. for a tongue weight of 910 lbs.(13%) plus the weight of the weight distribution hitch which is about 100 lbs. for a total of 1010 lbs.

Base on your previous post, this leaves less than 200 lbs. for you, wife, kids and anything else you may want to carry in the truck. I realize that these numbers are approximate and may not affect you in any way, but I would look long and hard at the truck and also the trailer. You may want to consider either a differant truck or differant trailer.

Good luck with whatever you choose
