challenges with safety ring for power cord

Hello, we are new owners of 2012 Roadtreck Agile ss. We plugged in at home to charge the batteries and now we cant seem to get the safety ring to turn to remove the shore power cord. This is the original power cord (it seems the original owner rarely used the power cord) and it is about 3/4 inch ring. It may have been thread wrong. Any suggestions of how to budge the safety ring? Are there newer models of power cords with a more user friendly safety ring?
