Just bought my first RV 40' 2000 Riata. Haven't ran it for about two weeks and I think batteries died. Engine dead. How do I charge batteries. Will the shore line do it?
Most newer coaches charge the house and chassis batteries from the shore power and or generator, but I have heard many older ones do not charge chassis. Do you have a boost switch to get the engine to start?? Alternator will definitely charge chassis. If no boost you may want to put a separate battery charger on the chassis batteries overnight. I store mine with a trickle charger on the chassis as a just in case.
Some chargers won't charge deeply discharged batteries - a safety feature, I think. Lead acid batteries don't like being deeply discharged and yours might now be damaged or at the very least, lost some storage capacity or ability to deliver a lot of amps.
If they are dead, probable damage. Most likely they were no good when purchased and were just good enough to sell the unit. Have them amp tested before wasting aa bunch of time. So far as what will charge them, that seems to be anyones guess unless you have a manual.
