Awhile ago, measured in decades, we used coatings on pistons when rebuilding engines for sport. Current light duty engines use electro-plating to affix a coating to aluminum block cylinder surfaces.
This does eliminate economical rebuilding blocks, hence, engines unless you can economically resurface the cylinders with the appropriate material.
The video information provided is fascinating to learn just how far the coatings have advanced.
