Driving to SW Minnesota from Buffalo, NY

Hello,
We will bedriving from the Buffalo, NY area to SW Minnesota in 2 weeks. We wondering if anyone had a favorite route that avoided the congestion of Chicago and other large urban areas. Thanks!!

In my experience you have to either avoid Chicago or be very careful to avoid rush hours and hope for the best. Big city roads have all sorts of hazards other than volume.

Last summer we tried to avoid going from the Elkhart area going west out I-80.
We won’t do that again. When we dropped down south to avoid Chicagoland, it cost 4 extra hours. Hmmm…
Next time, we will just be sure to go through the area VERY early.

That is what we should have done before 6 am, but instead we drove US421 south and then went west on US24.

But hey, we got to see parts of Indiana and Illinois we never would have seen otherwise.
