Memorial Day Weekend Trip up to Oregon and back in the Ram Promaster 2500 has showmn 16.3 to 16.7 mpg based on auto shutoff fill ups. The trip computer on the van itself is (amazingly) showing about the same numbers.
Did you add the larger gas tank? Just curious.

No, the 24 gallon tank at 16.3 MPG is giving us up to 390 miles per tank. That worked pretty good. But on this trip we crossed the very rural eastern central oregon areas and filled up with 23.1 gallons once and 23.5 the other time. So we were pushing it :).
The tank was going to cost us several thousand dollars and it did not seem worth it. Next summer we are going to drive to Alaska, though, so we will have to plan fueling a little.
We are probably going to get a rack that mounts in the trailer hitch and one use of it might be a five gallon gas tank or two to make sure we are okay on that trip.
If the van had ended up only getting 12 or so MPG then the tank would have been more attractive since our effective range would have been more like 250 miles. But this trip confirmed that we will be fine with the 24 gallon tank.

You may consider a 5 gal external tank to take with you. If you can figure out have to haul it.
