Someone recently mentioned the Greenlane fuel card which is similar to the Open Roads card but I've been unable to find much info on the Greenlane company.

As I understand it, the two major differences between Greenlane and Open Roads are that Greenlane will charge to my credit card and Open Roads will debit my bank account. Open Roads charges a transaction fee and a percentage of the savings. Since Greenlane doesn't charge a transaction fee or a percentage of savings, how are they compensated?

If there are any users on the forum, I would like to hear from you.

Following, options are always good to have.

Here is where it was mentioned previously but it doesn't answer your question(s).

I'm looking for the catch. They have to be making money.

I have one. It’s pretty simple. It’s fuel card that is tied to a debit or credit card. This is good for me as some trips are a business expense and some are not. I am in Indio and there is a love and TA not far from me. Both are priced very closely.

Interestingly when I compare them to open roads they are close.

The credit card feature really works for me instead of a checking account. I think the key in all these cards is guaranteed volume purchase and once Greenlane gets critical mass they are marketing to trucking operators as well they will be a viable competitor to open roads. Once I signed up their support team has been relentless in making sure I got my card activated it etc. how it works is you go into the app and find the truck stop and how much fuel you want def etc. once that’s done you take the actual card to the pump and authenticate and start fueling.

At the loves near me the discount is .39 a gallon. Not bad.

After you add in the transaction fee and the 10% savings Greenlane is several cents less. I have a credit card offering a 5% discount but I don't think it will apply in this case. Thanks for the info.

I'm the one that mentioned the Greenlane app in the prior post. I got the Greenlane card in early May as a supplement to the Open Roads fuel card. Because the Greenlane card works at Pilot, Flying J, and Petro in addition to Loves, TA, and Maverick it gives me more fueling options than what I had with just Open Roads.

From what I understand, the Greenlane app was developed for and is currently used primarily by truckers. I heard about the app from a friend and decided to look into it. When I was doing my due diligence I asked how they make their money and was told they are a fuel cooperative and make their money on the difference between what they buy the fuel for and what they sell it for. Pretty straight forward. When I signed up I spoke to a person named Jessica at 1-844-906-0480. I'm sure she can do a better job answering questions about the company.

We just got back from a month long 3,000 mile trip out West. I used the Greenlane app for fueling and it worked very well. You pull up to the pump, open the app, select the amount of fuel/DEF you want, authorize the transaction, swipe the Greenlane card and begin fueling. Simple and quick. The Savings between Open Roads and Greenlane were similar. Some locations higher. Some locations lower. Generally within a couple of cents.

I have no affiliation with Greenlane other than as a customer.

Great to see more options.
@sheridany - in your experience out west, do you see more station options on Greenlane compared to what is on OpenRoads?
We have a 10 week trip to the north west this year and our experience in the past was the west had a slimmer choice of stations on OpenRoads.

open roads has more option aside from the standard TA/petro, Loves. OR has speedys I think it's called and some others. That doesn’t mean that Greenlane won’t add more stops to their partner network in the future since they are just starting out. If you are comfortable giving your cc info to Greenlane it’s a great option to have. In the beginning people didn’t like having OR do an ACH to a checking account but they persisted with that model. And with Greenlane it’s a two step process where you engage with the app prior to swiping the fuel card. Some may not care for that.

Mudflap is the same with a different process. Have to go in the app, get the code on the screen, go inside and show to the cashier for them to turn the pump on.

Tied to a CC as well. An option when there are no other discounts in the area.

For Open Roads we opened a separate bank account that isn’t tied to the others for overdraft etc. just transfer money in when needed.

First try at Loves 338, Richmond Hill GA exit 89 I95 was a bust for the Greenlane App. The App didn’t recognize any truck stop within the area as we sat at the pump.
OpenRoad card worked fine.
BTW the truck stop was completely full of lineman trucks waiting on the Hurricane repairs.
30 or 40 crews stacked in the truck stop.Four or five deep waiting at the pumps.

On a side note, exit Ford Road, I 95 GA has a Dog Bone loop under the bridge when you get off the highway. Real PITA to negotiate. Steady stream of high speed traffic that appears suddenly from under the bridge.
My guess is this roadway configuration is not popular with truckers hence the very reasonable pricing.

Call Greenlane about issue at Loves 338. They explained that it might be the VPN I use. Turned off the VPN this morning and all the stops became available in the App.
Good to know.

Yes, a VPN is going to cause your phone, etc. to be located where the VPN server resides, not your current location.

Next stop I was able to get the Greenlane card to work as advertised. After several verification steps on the App the card worked like a standard credit card no additional steps needed.
