My name is Jeff just started camping again after 25 years off. Camping has changed a lot and I am still learning my new camper or my new camper for me.
Have a question does anyone know what this is?

Hard to make out the photo, but it looks like a small inverter, 12vDC to 120V. Many of those have a USB charge port n them. Trace where the wiring goes, if it taps into the house batteries you have your answer.

Also, if you dismount it it should have a make and model number label somewhere on it you could google. Amazon has thousands of them at all different capacities.

It’s on a Salem SFX and the negative wire is not attached. I bought it off an individual no owner manual. Every one even non campers has told me it’s an inverter but I am afraid to hook the ground (black) wire up afraid I might hurt something. I don’t know why it was disconnected.

Probably best to remove and replace, then your sure that 1, its installed correctly, and 2, its sized to do the job you want it to do. Many will buy without much regard to specs and what they want it to do and wind up with vastly underpowered device that then promptly blows out on them when they over load it.

Agree with Scott. Thats a very small, cheap inverter, probably disconnected for a reason. I would determine what the right size inverter is for your camping needs, with due consideration to your battery bank capacity, and then shop for a reliable inverter and check/perform all wiring to make sure its done right. You could keep that inverter for charging phones but probably not much else. It looks like its around 400w. It also looks like its not in a good location - I’m sure you can come up with a better installation.
