I just had a thought. It was my impression that driving the Van would charge the house battery however does the house battery need to be turned on in order for it to take a charge? Thank you for your help.

Depends how it is wired. You can test it by having a volt meter connected to the house battery, and turn on the engine.
If the voltage goes up, the alternator is charging the battery. If it stays the same, it does not.

The engine does charge the battery. My question is does the on/off switch in the van have to be ON while you're driving in order to charge the battery or does it matter?
Thanks.
