Okay, who else is guilty...I'm working on my trip planning as I'm very soon getting to escape and hit the roads again. I'm heading to the EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI first thing. I have about 3-1/2 weeks to get there. I'm finding myself guilty of what I usually do and that is finding campgrounds along the driving route and not venturing off too far to really discover better things to see. Who else is guilty of doing this? I guess I'm more focused on getting there than finding adventures along the way, for now.

Oh, pro tip. If you use something like RV Trip Wizard and have a STAR rating filter such as 3 stars or better, you will filter out the unrated stops such as Love's travel stops. I may try one, looks pretty nice in IN on the way north west for an overnighter. But be aware of your filters as you won't find spots like this that are just not yet rated yet.

Most times I don't even disconnect the toad. It's all about getting to our destination, than the siteseeing begins.

Unfortunately my default mode is "Get There". Gail always reminds me it is about the trip not just the destination:)

When I have a destination and somewhat of a schedule I do that and often use the HH trip planner setting the “distance from route” filter to around 10 miles. But my next big trip, starting in early July has no destination and very little direction other than North, leisure, and exploration. So I’m not going to do much planning other than smaller highways, longer stays, and stops at places where we can ride the bikes and row the boats.

If anything, we just hit the same scenic areas on trips. Hopefully, as the kids get older, we can branch out to new places. I’m really looking forward to taking them to historic places as they start learning about history.

When we hosted, I put in the effort to find as many local poi's as I could. I made flyers with the list as handouts. I find it unfortunate that people have little interest in their own backyards. When the kids get older they may have learned how to follow in your footprints.

Just a thought! Happy exploring!

@Neal an overnight at a truck stop can be very noisy with engines idling all night and trucks coming and going. I highly recommend trying places like churches etc. I recently had a trip where I found a church at the waypoint, looked them up on google along with an earth view and emailed them and they said no problem. Nice quiet lot all to myself. Golf courses are another good option as long as you are out early. All these can be found on RVTW.

Don’t get me wrong, we’ve been to a lot of places. I was mostly thinking of how we tend to stop at the same national park while road tripping to California.

We drove to Texas back in November, a first; and went to Florida for Spring Break. And of course New Years on Hawai’i. No complaints from the kids… Speaking of which, I was just packing our SUP for camping this weekend and was reminded that the last time we used it was in Kona (the snorkeling equipment was in the bag with it).

We used to follow your pattern until we retired and became full timers. On occasion, we will fall back if we have an an appointment or a promise to keep but for the most part we try to stay away from the Interstates and big cities as much as we can. We would rather "see the country" than just the black top and buildings. We like history, scenery, food and some times oddities. Roadside America - Guide to Uniquely Odd Tourist Attractions does provide hints on occasion if we are in an area that does not contain any bucket list items.

We have done the same until now. Has been about doing things at the destination and not along the way.

Now that we are retired the trips can slow down and may take some time at each of the stops to look around instead of the “get there” mode.

Both Loves travel stops we stayed at in the way north along 75 were great. You’d think they would be noisy but we’re nice and quiet. Even the one where the 4 spots were on the gas side of the station wasn’t bad since most of the traffic overnight was semis out back.
