Last September, I decided to try out the Monument Valley KOA Kampground. I went there after helping with the John Wayne Cancer Foundation's Grit Series Half Marathon near Ridgway, Colorado.
Usually, whenever I go to Monument Valley, I stay at Goulding's Lodge Campground (now owned by the Navajo Nation). It is located at Milepost 2, Hwy. 163.
It is a relatively new campground, so there is little shade as the trees are still on the small side. But that's why we have awnings, right? I had a back-in campsite. It had a table and barbecue grill and full hook-ups.
The sites are a bit close to each other, but fairly level with gravel surface (like Goulding's).
For recreation, there's a playground for the kiddies. For adults, Jeep rentals and on-site horseback tours are available. I went with a horseback tour. This was the second time in my life I rode a horse. It was 50 years ago that I rode one at Catalina Island at age 20. So, I decided to do it again at 70. (Ask me in 10 years if I can still do so.) It was fun riding in the Monument Valley area. I recommend adding it to your bucket lists.
The staff was nice and helpful and the campground has a small store at the office, but is limited on food. The views from the campground were great. I would stay there again.
