Hi there. New to the group, first post.
We just got a 2021 Roadtrek Zion SRT. We live on Vancouver island and are planning to travel into California and Arizona in January and February. Wondering if we will need to have campground reservations or if we would be able to fly by the seat of our pants. What have others experienced?

No reservations needed for Walmart parking lots

Traveling that time of year your "space" competition are the "Snowbirds" The southern part of California (Palm Desert area etc.) will be booked. Central and Northern CA you should be fine without reservations (except the popular places (beach, etc.) These days I find having reservations gives us peace of mind. If you can be flexible and adapt as needed you can do it sans reservations, otherwise, plan out your trip. Your call. (Sorry, no experience in AZ.)

Having just left CA permanently, I have to say it depends. If your talking BLM land and desert camping, probably get away with seat of the pants. If your looking for ocean front sites, full hook up sites, etc than I would say plan out as far as you possibly can. Be prepared for sticker shock for the second option as well.

Thanks for your input everyone. This really helps.

I didn't go into it, but pricing is also seasonal. Once the snowbirds start arriving rates double (or more) in most parks that cater to them. Arizona is a primary destination of that crowd and Feb is mid season for them. Good luck getting an open space anywhere they congregate. (I say that tongue in cheek, cause I am one!..Only difference is we go to Florida to a site we bought in a 55up community so we have a destination locked in, just have to get there!!)
