So we are finally picking up our new rig this coming Thursday (yea). It’s been 10 years since our last MH - is it still necessary to use RV specific toilet paper?

With the macerator toilets, the simple answer is "Yes." That doesn't necessarily mean you can't use some brands of household TP. A good test is to put a single sheet of TP in a large jar filled halfway with cold water and cap it. It helps if the jar is clear so you can see the results. Now, shake the jar vigorously for 15 seconds.

If the TP has broken down into small pieces, it is pretty safe to use. If it does not break down into relatively small pieces,I would avoid using it in the coach. We have tested Charmin UltraSoft (NOT Charmin UltraStrong) and it passed. We are using it in our coach.

We've used Scotts single ply and the Costco brand (via reco from another Newmar owner) which is 2 ply w/o issues.

I'm glad @Wrl1605 started this thread because I've been confused about this for awhile. We use the RV paper we get a WalMart, but what difference does it really make? The paper goes through the toilet and into a holding tank and from there into a sewer/septic tank. So what difference does it make to the RV how the paper desolves?

I'm guessing that your coach does not have mascerating toilets, @Jim. With gravity toilets, it isn't nearly as critical though TP that doesn't break up can (in rare occasions) cause a clog in the pipes.

With mascerating toilets, paper that doesn't break down easily wraps around the grinder blades and requires that you disassemble the unit to clear the problem. And, it is a sh__ty job!

I’ve had this happen once in three years. We had no sewer hookup and the macerated toilet was on low flush. DW used TP, but didn’t add water before flushing and thus we had a clog. Fortunately, it was the rear bath toilet with easy access from the emergency door.

We use the same multi-ply TP that we use at home. Not going to change because if this. Just more careful and more aware of how to resolve the issue.

Perhaps this goes without saying but I just can't help myself. Those wipes that say "flushable" do not play well with a macerator toilet. Makes for a toilet disassembly project and extra fun working to unwrap the "flushable" wipe from around the grinder blade.

I asked those sailors I met when I first got my sailboat about this same issue. At that time I was a lone wolf. What they told me was if my girlfriend flushed anything but brown or yellow down the head to get rid of her. My face told it all ?????? Paper goes in the trash they said.

In a boat your holding tank is pumped out you see. Anyhow we do the same with the RV seems TP is a good binder and makes adobe out of what you put in.
