You should have a charge controller somewhere in the vehicle and the panels and controller need to be connected to a healthy battery that can accept charging. At least that is how it works on mine and in these conditions, it quite simply works all the time - no turn on or off . . . it just works. Its mindless in its simplicity.

I try very, very hard to not let my lead acid trailer battery drop below about 12.1 volts on the controller screen to prevent damage to the internal battery plates. Switching every lamp in the vehicle to an LED light bulb helped a lot.
