Hello and thank you for the add. I have RV'd in the past and am finally realizing my dream to travel the country. I just purchased a 2021 Class C and am looking into a surge protector with an EMS added. (Not sure exactly what that means) but have since realized this is a definite plus to protect your investment. Any suggestions/recommendations what I should look for? TIA

Welcome to RVF, @Lacarr; glad to have you here with us. The most commonly recommended unit is made by Progressive Industries. Not sure whether your coach has a 30A or 50A power connection; the units are different for the different amperage. Here are links to the top-of-the-line PI units for both 30A and 50A.

PI does make a couple of less expensive models, but you don’t get all the power analysis features. They will still do a good job of protecting from surges, however. Look for the SSP series.

If you can afford the best, I think it is the way to go...and, what we have used for years.

what is your rig. Not that it is important but wondering. What do you do with it? again not to important unless you plan mostly off grid.

Here is a pretty good website that goes into some detail.

I use the Hughes Autoformer 50 amp for my Class A. It's not cheap but I think it's the best. No only does it protect from power surges but it will boost the camp ground's low voltage if necessary which is REALLY important so you don't cause damage to all your appliances and A/C units from operating on low voltage. The LED lights also warn you of open grounds or open neutrals or any other kind of wiring issue BEFORE you plug your RV into the post at the camp ground. Here's a 30 amp model for your Class C.

I also REALLY like this little gizmo that plugs into any 120v outlet inside your RV. It monitors the system voltage at a glance. I like to check it when my generator starts up and also when I'm plugged into a new camp ground that I don't know what their electrical system is like. It's instant piece of mind.

When the power came on down here in Texas we had several brownouts and my external Progressive EMS report voltage as low as 80 volts. Borwouts can do as much damage as a spike to electronics like TV and etc. I won't plugin with some sort of external EMS plug into the pole.

I second this. We have the 30 amp version portable . It has a sacrifice module as I call it inside too. If overloaded to the point of burning it up, you simply buy another replaceable module and back in business.

@Lacarr ... we have always installed a "hardwired" type in the coach itself. I personally like Progressive Industries and here is the 50 amp version. They also have a 30 amp version as well.
