Share with me your thoughts on a surge protector and what brand is best. I have no idea what I need and don't want to spend a lot of money. I know about the EMS and they are to expensive at this time.

I have a Hughes Power Watchdog PWD50-EPO. I can see power readings from my phone, error codes are displayed both on the phone and on the device. I can even reset from the phone, so I don’t have to go outside and cycle the power if it trips for some reason.

In addition to the onboard EMS, I use a Surge Guard surge protector. It provides surge protection in addition to letting me know that the pedestal is wired correctly, before I plug the coach in. It’s a pretty basic surge protector but provides what I need.

Buy the best surge suppressor you can afford! The damage done by a surge (a lightning strike on a power line 5 miles away will do it) can be substantial and expensive. And, a “cheap” surge suppressor is little better than no surge suppressor.

Here’s the least expensive one I can recommend; about $90 on Amazon.

Hi Rookie, welcome to RV Forums. It would help if we knew what type of RV you have. There are several different brands and styles of surge protector.

We used to have a 5th wheel and had something called an Open Neutral in the power cord. It fried much, much more in the 5W than any surge suppressor would have cost, this is not an area where cheap is a good idea.

Hughes, Progressive and Southwire are the 3 most prominent brands. Do you have a 30 or 50 AMP RV? Start there.

Not really a fix for an open neutral, but surge suppressors are a good idea if on grid.

I agree but, had I had one in the RV it would have protected my rig from the excessive voltage from the open neutral.

The Surge Guard 34951, 34931 portable units now have load and line side protection. Techno RV
The Surge Guard 35550, 35530 hardwired are permanently mounted in the RV.

Progressive Industries has very good products we wired a EMS-HW50C in our 5th wheel and it worked perfectly. Progressive Industries

Hughes Autoformers from what I understand has very good products. Hughes Autoformers
