When opening a member’s profile, along the bottom of that window are 3 buttons: Follow, Ignore, Start Conversation.
I will start with some assumptions and please correct, add, edit these naive guesses.

Follow. Clicking on this member’s follow button means I would get a notification on every content that this particular member posts?

Ignore. By clicking on ignore, all content from this user is no longer visible to me?

Start Conversation. This is the start of a private communication between that member and myself.
 
I believe you are correct sir. I did a check on the XenForo forum (this site uses XenForo) and here is the answer on follow:
