So - If I see a trailer has a 3500lb GROSS weight - if my truck states it has a towing capacity of...say...4500lbs that means it's capable enough? Can someone please clarify? Should I assume that isn't the packed weight of my trailer?

Thanks!

the axle is a 3500 lbs capacity. this does not include wheels and tires. only suspended weight. That means that the acutal max weight is likely 3800 lbs max.

Thanks Kevin - Do you typically err on the side of performance and go 1 step up when it comes to a truck? I really dont want the bare minimum - that could be because I live in Colorado and drive in the mountains a lot. I really dont want an underpowered setup.

I personally stay happy with smaller trailers to keep truck size down. I can do with or without power. I do like my 1500 Ram with 5.7l and 8 speed tyranny. Colorado rockies don't slow me down.
However 5.7l chevy with 4speed is not that great. Same trailer weight but pin weight requires the higher capacity truck. Depends on what your towing.
