I want to test my power source and step motor. I think I can do that by connecting the "RED" (hot) wire from the 4 way (controller) plug to the "RED" wire from the 2 way (motor) plug. Thus, by-passing the controller. My question is what do I do with the other wire (yellow) from the motor ? Your help is appreciated...

RESOLVED...after replacing the controller, the motor, and the door magnetic switch the steps still didn't operate. I was stumped. Called a mobile RV tech (highly recommended) and he checked out my installation. He said "excellent" job and all the wire leads checked out for power/no power. He crawled out, went to his work van and came back with a new controller. Took my new one off and put his new one on. Steps worked flawlessly. A brand new (made in China) LCI Lippert controller was defective. Not sure I was ever going to figure that one out. I'm glad to have the steps working properly and fine with all new components, but irritated that one can no longer expect a new item ( cost over $250.00) to work as designed. There is NO quality control and...well, I've ranted enough. Because of this, I really don't no what the cause for the original malfunction was...hmmm...

It happens. It has happened to me with very hard to replace fuel pump on aircraft engine. New pump was defective. Had to do it all over again.
