We never lived in Atlanta but have traveled I-75 north south for 30+ years.
IMO the question of going through or around will be answered by your preferences, what stresses you, what time of day and what day you are traveling, what events may be happening in the city and of course the variable of traffic accidents.
If we are driving through on a weekend, we will time our travel to go through early in the morning (through before 7am) and will drive straight through.

US-80 is a straight shot to Pooler, Ga., just south of Hilton Head. Why in the world would you even consider going through Atlanta?
