Why is that?
It utilizes a heat exchanger on the side of the transmission. That heats or cools the oil to optimize running temperature. That's just one of the reasons the ZF is considered one of the best transmissions on the market today.

Sorry for the fact checking, but!

Yes. If you mean a Skyactiv-G engine paired with a Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission, it uses a conventional torque converter. However, Mazda uses a special design with a multi-plate lock-up clutch that locks up early and often to save fuel. [1, 2, 3]

If you meant G-Vectoring Control (GVC), that is a software system for handling and stability, not a transmission part. It reduces engine torque electronically during turns, but it does not change or replace the physical torque converter in the gearbox. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Transmission Facts
  • Skyactiv-Drive Autos: Contain a physical torque converter combined with a direct lock-up clutch.
  • Manual Models: Do not use a torque converter (they use a standard foot-operated clutch pedal).
  • G-Vectoring Control: A computer program in the engine and stability systems, not a transmission type. [2, 3, 4, 9, 10]
If you can share the specific Mazda model and year or whether it is an automatic or manual, I can confirm the exact setup for your car.

Large transmission coolers are important on transmissions normally, but useless on a ZF-8 transmission.

Hi Keven

I think you may be looking a different vehicle. Possibly the CX-5. You post references for 2104-2019 engines. The CX-90 was first sold in 2024. Here is one reference from Mazda. There are many others. The wet clutch disengages the engine from the drive line and the electric motor of the Mild Hybrid replacing the Torque multiplication of the Torque Converter.

That is possible! I copied and pasted the model the PO listed into Google AI, then copied what AI gave me into this post. My question was does this transmission use a torque converter?

That is the lazy man's method! I'm guilty! My excuse is after having the worst vehicle I ever had crushed, I would never considered another one. So didn't do a serious effort to verify results.

I did get some solid results!

1. Don't trust AI
2. I still think the same about the company that produced the worst car I ever owned.

I am sorry I didn't vet the AI results I posted.
