I acquired a softstarter earlier this week.
Yup I don't really need it, but I discovered a problem I thought I would share.
No matter how I tried to search this forum I got (0) results on the topic. Seemed strange to me because I was involved in some of those topics.
This post is a test...
...few instances where breaker has tripped when A/C + fridge & other powered items were run at he same time. So I am thinking that adding a softstart module would be a good idea.
Can anyone recommend a make/model suitable? I see such a wide range of softstart units that say "they work for...
Thanks, exactly what i did. New AC unit board controlled 10-12 button thermostats and his is a 5. Wired up, AC & heat pump working fine. He ordered a softstart as well. The dealer sold him the AC unit and softstart and the softstart is the wrong one.
That was one of the units I was considering just based on other posts. Does that mount up inside the unit? or does it get wired inline between the RV and the unit power feed?
Looking for info from those that have installed softstart equipment on their a/c units. I know @Neal has and I pm’d him but thought it might be worth asking the group about their experiences with these units.
There is a company called Softstart that is advertising units at $50 off and free...
That is not how a softstart works, that plug-in device would effect all the power in your RV.
I have installed softstarts on 200 HP motors to small half HP motors. They HAVE to be connected to the specific device (motor) and controlled to operate during start up (and sometimes shutdown)...
Very,vary sceptical!!!
Why???
15k unit runs, not starts on 1500 watts. Or roughly 100 watts for 1k BTU.
So you can softstart one ac on 3000w generator, but the second will exceed the capacity of the generator.
But there's more! The generator has a power dip before the engine catches up...
What we are looking at!
A single phase(technically two phase) compressor motor has a run capacitor. In the old days a softstart device was an increased capacity capacitor (typically under 10bucks.)
In a dedicated system there may have been a relay and a start capacitor.
No matter, when the...
Finished up everything and turned my system on to test yesterday. All is well. Next week I will install two softstart units. Going to wait and see if I even need solar.
...3100 for running the A/C. I think this unit should be able to start an run my 13.5 A/C with no problems but I have been looking into the softstart products and came across this product on Ebay; RV A/C Starter™ Easy start your Camper Rooftop Air Conditioner, SIMPLE DIY! | eBay

...an option for an overnight stay while on the road. As mentioned previously the start up of the AC is where you are probably getting overloaded. Last time I looked Softstart makes a dogbone version of their otherwise "installed at each AC" device, might be worth a look for use while traveling.
Running draw for a new 13.5 btu a/c is 12-13 amps in a ‘spec world’.
However you will need a “softstart“ device as most motors pull significantly more at start up without some type of modification.
