I'm new to RV-ing. The motor home manufacture recommends using expensive degradable toilet paper. On my boat, "single ply" seems to work fine. Should I buy the expensive #2 TP, or just use single ply?? Thanks!

You can use what ever type you fancy. The "RV" paper is a rip off in my opinion. We use any decent brand. The 'secret' is to make sure you use enough water so when you dump your tank so most everything goes down the hose. Been doing it that way for five years full time with no issues.......

Single ply is fine but yeah, the RV community is paranoid (or scammed) into thinking you have to use the rapid dissolving toilet paper. Probably the same scam as adding some powder to your gallons of yuck to make you think it's going to do something with it such as prevent stink, make it clean, whatever.

This is what I've been using and if in stock I do get it. I'm amazed to see it's actually in stock again.

Amazon.com

As long as it is available I'll continue to use it.

And then you can do as I do. Don't put TP in the head at all.

Wal-Mart also sells the Scott rapid dissolving toilet paper which is a lot cheaper than the RV or marine type. With a small boat the toilet output goes through small diameter tubing to the holding tank and it is easily jammed. With an RV with a standard toilet the waste goes straight down into the tank and then exits via a large diameter hose at the dump station and so normal TP should present no problems.

With our new Navion I was please to see that Winnebago added a inlet port so one can attach a garden hose and add water to the black tank before or after dumping the contents.

What Paper???

We use the waste basket for the paper, just the way most people do south of the boarder.

It is amazing what some guests on a boat feel free to plug the head plumbing with isn't it?
Since you obviously have been around boat heads and appreciate the their true nastiness, here's my story: Week long cruise in the California Delta, Cherry season in the California Delta, 10 year old grandson aboard, grandson ingested more cherry pits that he spit out. I leave the rest of the story to your imagination. That incident was 20 years ago, that boat never saw another cherry aboard.

I would rather deal with an RV head any day.

I paid attention to all the horror stories. This is the first on the pits of head maintenance though. The most noted is feminine hygiene products, of which I had a sign made up for. OK!! I didn't really have room for a sign. I had a small bumper sticker made up that I placed on the lid of the head.

If you can get rapid dissolving TP, get it. Backup would be single ply.

Everyone should decide early on what paper they want to use and stick with their decision IMHO. Since the holding tank and waste systems in an RV and/or a large motor yacht are not the same as a residential septic system then I would automatically ignore any butt wipes that claim to be "septic tank" safe.

Do the test yourself to see what paper is best. Take two water bottles and fill them about half full of water. Put a couple sheets of different toilet paper in each bottle and leave them sit. After 6 or 8 hours examine them, which one seems to be falling apart? Shake the bottles, which one dissolves better? Obviously you want the paper that dissolves quicker.

We have always used Scott's RV paper from Walmart. It really isn't that expensive and works great.
