These guys are the experts in the Workhorse 8.1L Chassis. I would start with an upgrade of the spark plug wires (In the 8.1L they run over (HOT) manifold) and new Iridium spark plugs. That may solve your issue right there. It'll be a well spent $250 Blessings
I'd have good scanner on it before buying any parts. By "good" I mean one that will show you the same data the computer sees, not just a code reader. I'd look for the computer seeing a misfire or a false reading from the knock sensor. Stuff like that.
