I have seen several people with a shade attached to their awnings. This shade comes from the awning to the ground then anchored to the ground. Will this actually help reduce damage from wind or increase the potential?

It will not help with the protection. Mine is connected to the awning with magnets so that it will release if the awning retracts or moves too much.

The reason for staking it back is to keep it from blowing in light winds.

Yes, it could help. I have the Vista Shade and it's zipper connected to my awning and then you can tie it down so theoretically it will offer some protection but enough of a gust and poof, it's gone. It's not worth the risk.

Good point in difference of Girard vs other style.

I have Girard and it attaches with magnets, so no protection.
