Brake fluid change

How often do you all change your brake fluid? Some say it shouldbe done every year,some say no more than three years. What say ye?

After having the pedal go to the floor because of bad fluid in flat Florida, of all places, I'm going to do it every three years at least.

I plan to go 5 years on my DOT 5 silicone fluid vehicle because the DOT 5 does not attract water. But for my DOT 4 braking systems, yea, three years would be my limit. The way I look at it, change the fluid on the required intervals and the calipers and the ABS pump/module will last longer.

Pay them a little now or a lot later.

My 2004 buick has never needed the fluid changed. All the vehicles and all the miles I have put on them none ever had their fluid changed either. I think it only benefits the shop you are using.

50,000 miles is a good number, and also a good point to service your transmission (if you haven't done it already) and change the oil in the rear end. And when you do the brake fluid, all you need to do is empty the reservoir with a turkey baster and refill - you dont need to bleed all the fluid from all the lines. Same goes for power steering fluid.
