Dishwasher cleaning

Our dishwasher has been working great, except the faint funky smell. Today I took it apart and removed everything I can remove from the inside.
OMG, OMG, OMG ?….. what a scary mess of a build up was behind the bottom cover/strainer and everything else you don’t see.
After an hour of cleaning with scrub brush and vinegar, I m about half done. Thinking tomorrow to clean some of the build up on the parts with CLR outside the coach.
Looks like major cleaning should be done at least once a year. Looks like mine was never cleaned since new?

Here’s a dishwasher cleaning trick I learned years ago; and, it has worked quite well. Buy some powdered Tang orange-flavored drink at the grocery store. Start your empty dishwasher and let it run for a couple of minutes until the interior is warm. Interrupt the cycle, open the door and fill the detergent dispenser with powdered Tang. Sprinkle a bit of the powdered Tang on the bottom dish rack and floor of the dishwasher. Close door and resume the washing cycle. When it is done, your dishwasher will be cleaner than you can imagine. And, it will have a fresh citrus smell.

This trick works because of the citric acid in Tang. It removes stains as well as built-up gunk. An even more effective (but significantly more hazardous) cleaning agent is powdered oxalic acid, obtained from drug store pharmacies. It is a hazardous chemical to pets and kids, so must be safely secured. We used it a couple of times years ago, but felt that Tang worked nearly as well and was not hazardous.

Gentlemen, I certainly think these products will help, but unfortunately, a Fisher &Paykel dishwasher drawer will have to be taken apart according to directions to have all the filters cleaned now and then. It is certainly more complicated than my Bosch at home, but I still would not be without it. It is gross when you see the build-up in that big bottom filter. It is also a good idea to dry out the small filter under the silverware bin before a period of non use. Judy D

Tang is cheaper and you can buy it in almost any grocery store. I’m sure the powdered citric acid would probably work just fine.
