Posted in General that I'm close to closing on a 2015 Dutch Star 4312. Really nervous and excited and was interested in hearing anyone's experience with it.

If it closes I'll be flying to TX and driving back to NY. Any advice on first drive?

Take your time plan your route and stops and go slow. Get a good RV GPS like a Garmin to guide you.

Get lessons, if you don’t have experience driving something this large.
RV School. It cost much less that a repair.

Get a certified independent inspection before closing. This is a must.

Regarding lessons research your instructor carefully prior to committing. We had a bad experience with our instructor from RV School.

However, practice in a very large parking lot without obstructions and a stack of cones is very useful to get a sense of how the RV moves through space. Then an experienced co pilot over known roads to manage real world events helps.
A DP has many systems that are much different than a typical car to understand and become familiar.

Wow, nice choice! And congratulations! Dutch Star is such a nice coach, I'm sure you're gonna enjoy it for may years to come. Have fun!

I've driven large commercial box trucks and flatbed over 30' long for years, this does surpass it by about 10' so I'm thinking of hitting up a local school for a few hours just to get a feeling. If they don't have something close in length but have something more aligned with what I drove though not too sure of the point.

Thank Jim, how's the RV park? You open this time of year, might need a place to stay on the way back home and considering I followed the post from the initial build it would be a shame to miss that as a stop.

Update:

  • Finance hurdle is mostly finished
  • Inspection by dealer (lol, whatever that is worth) started
  • My inspector is going in on Tuesday morning, full inspection and photos and I made sure to include multiple fluid test (since RV has close to 80K miles).
If all clears and I really hope so considering how excited and invested I'm getting:
I would be going a week from next Monday to see it for the first time, drive it, go through everything and .... CLOSE.

I unfortunately would have to leave it there since I have travel out of the country, and return late march to do the drive home.
Houston ---> NY canonball run style.

@Jim I was hoping to stop by but considering it's a fast drive home it would have been a one nighter. Hopefully I'm on your neck of the woods soon after because I really want to check out what you've built.

Wow, must have been a slow night if you followed all that! I go back once in a while just to refresh myself, but I tire of it quickly! lol.

We open April 1st, but if your out this way before then and need a place to park for a day or two, just let me know. I'll set you up a place to park for a day or two, no charge.

Ha, it definitely was a long read but it’s like a good book, I wanted to see where the story was going, yours was the first RV park added to my map of parks to visit.

Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on that, I think the goal will be to drive it back in 3 days/2 nights right before the end of March. I’ll let you know as the date gets closer.

Cheers
