This past week I made two trips through Monument Valley on my way and coming home from Colorado with the LightShip. During each trip I passed through the area now called Forest Gump Point on US 163 North of Monument Valley. There is a growing cult of Gump followers who congregate around and on the center line of US163 just to get a selfie of the themselves on the spot where Forest Gump gave up his 3 year run in the movie.
This is a scene from the movie that has inspired this behavior.
Last Saturday I was Northbound on US 163 with my Insta360 camera running as I passed through Forest Gump Point. It is hard to see in this video but there was a Chinese couple standing squarely on the centerline of US163 with traffic passing on each side trying to get selfies of themselves at that point with Monument Valley in background. There were a number of other Chinese folks lining the road so it was no doubt a tourist group and this was one of the attractions.
Here is my video of the close call which required me to leave the paved surface to avoid my tow mirrors smacking the tourists the tourist on the centerline.
Yesterday I timed my trip home to pass by Forest Gump Point right at sunrise and decided to pull over and get some shots. There was a crowd there waiting for exactly sunrise to get a picture even though that was not in the movie. It is an amazing scene at dawn.
This afternoon there was a serious accident at Forest Gump Point, reported by the Navajo Nation Police. I guess this was inevitable given this attraction's location and the desire to get a selfie at the exact spot depicted in the movie right on the centerline of US 163.
