Sometimes I need to quote the message I'm replying to, but most times it's redundant. How do I stop automatically quoting?

I use the reply button, right next to the quote button.

If you click the Reply button on the bottom right of a post it automatically quotes the post. If you scroll down to the bottom and reply in the quick reply box then it won't quote it.

???I am more confused now. I did not quote yesterday but today I did????

OK this is a test. I see now. "Reply" in the post I'm replying to, will quote...Useful if it's a long thread with lots of comments. I might want to comment or ask a question on someone else's comment, so it's good to quote so others will know what I'm replying to. But if I'm chiming in on the topic in general, I don't need to quote original post. I could, though.
LOL, bad explanation, but I get it.
Thanks, Neal.

It's a neat system with features you may not realize. For example, highlight just this sentence and you'll see that you're offered to reply with quoting this sentence.

In addition you see a "+Quote" link on the lower right of a post. You can click this and the same in multiple posts in a thread and then in the reply box at the bottom you will see an option to insert quotes to you can respond to each one in a single reply.

And again, the "Reply" link button in the lower right of a post will quote that post. If you just scroll down and type in the box at the bottom it replies to the thread with no quotes unless you paste something in and use the quote button on the toolbar to highlight and wrap something in quotes, etc. Explore as you want, there is a test forum on the site you can tinker in or do so in this thread if you want.
