As a long time Naval Aviation Technician, then Offshore Oil and Gas Technician, I learned the value of having someone else inspect my work. Since I do most of my own RV maintenance and don’t have another set of technician eyes to inspect, I have developed the habit of inspecting my own work after a period of rest.
I recently replaced the propane oven with an air fryer, which necessitated a new electrical circuit. (I didn’t want to overload an existing plug circuit). After I completed the job, I waited two days to go back over everything and ensure that all the connections were good, wire was protected, etc. Then I closed everything up.
Upon checking the zip ties underneath, I found this.
The rear sway bar mount lost a bolt, bent, and was doing very little to keep the sway bay in place and doing its job. The bolt backed out and was gone. One bolt held the mount in place and the bushing slid over to one side.
Our recent trip to Texas nearly neat us to death on I-10 and we had some pretty bad winds. The last trip to Tennessee was pretty uneventful, so I think it happened on the Texas trip.
However, this was discovered simply be me looking around with some fresh eyes and when I was not tired.
Look all over when you’re checking your or anyone else’s work. This could have caused more problems down the road.
