Inverters vs Generators for small trailer

We've just tried out our new Forest River Flagstaff 19FDS trailer and realized, since we like to boondock, we need an inverter generator or generator and aren't clear as to which is best and for what purposes. We don't care about powering our microwave or air conditioner but want heat and refrig which is electric only to be useable. It has a solar panel which works great IF we have sun! We're looking for something that is around 40 lbs or less. Suggestions? Thanks very much.
