Question Mental block for traveling North East - tips???

I'm getting ready to head out but have no idea where to go. It's getting hot and humid here in central VA so I'm thinking head for the hills (Appalachians). Maybe just follow the I-81 corridor north, enjoy the mountains and West Virginia as an option as well. Otherwise as I look at the map to head north it's such an unknown for me, while I have been to Bar Harbor and enjoyed the nightly lobster, and am tempted to go back, anything from Maryland north seems to just not appeal to me and I don't know why. I have enjoyed some locations in New York, I think it was Syracuse, twin green lakes or something like that.

Any suggestions for the north east US to see, keep cool, keep costs down, etc.?

Lake George, NY is a nice area. I liked Ames Brook campground, in NH, Cog railroad and Mt Washington, nearby. You may want a more upscale campground. There are other options. Then there is the finger lake region of NY, with more wineries than you can count, several lakes and associated activities, Watkins Glen, etc. There is the bourbon region of Kentuky. Ohio also has some nice state parks. Michigan has some nice places. I like Poncho’s Pond, Heathside in Petoskey, etc.

Thanks. Yes, I am seeking water but more isolated and lower cost camping, no resorts, RV parking lots, etc.

Watkins Glen is great. I wish I had more time to explore all the finger lakes. How about the Adirondacks @Neal? It is on my list, but haven't been there yet.

There’s Ives Run in PA almost to the NY state line. Nice COE park with full hookups. Or perhaps the Adirondacks north of Lake Placid. We stayed at North Pole Campground.

Lake Placid, Northern VT, Northern NH and Northern Maine are nice this time of year. If you stay north in those states, you will enjoy it.
South near the MA border is less conducive to what you are looking for in my opinion. Lots of urban Boston, Hartford and NYC people summering in those border areas making it crowded, noisy and expensive.

You have gotten several good suggestions so far. Let me add a couple more. By the way I am in Freeport Maine right now and it is 60 deg the hi for the next week is 75. There are lots of places to explore and good food. If you go North you do know not to use the GW bridge but go over to the Como. If you are in the finger lakes area check out Eternal Flame Falls. It is a natural gas flame in a waterfall. Have you been to Niagara falls lately? Lots of intersting places along the St Laurance River. Hard to make recommendations when I don't know your interest. Let me know what you are interested in and I may have outher ideas.

I second Ives Run on beautiful lake Hammond, built by the Army core of engineers. Also Green Lake is nice, but they are both hard to get reservations on the spur of the moment.

Another favorite is Petoskey Michigan, there are two RV Resorts right next to Lake Michigan. I believe one is Sun Resort and I forget the name of the other one. You can also travel up and around the Great lakes and even go into Canada.

The finger Lakes are beautiful, like stated so many wineries you can shake a stick at.

You can also stop over in Mane and get your Lobster fix on the Rocky Shores with Lighthouses galore.

Traveling North in the summer is nice, beautiful scenery, cooler weather. But brutal in the winter months.

Tall Pones campground in Sidney, NY. Right on the river. Smal town. Several really good restaurants within a half hour drive.

Sauder Village western Ohio - relatively small, quiet, economical, no water, but small restaurant and bakery on the property. Another tony town, not far from Newmar.
