Another tip the Spartan RV Chassis trainer shared with us was how and why to purge our air systems of moister. The cool part is he gave us some great tools to assist in this process. Paraphrased:
  • First, here are 3 colored carabiners: one silver, one green, and one red. Go out to your rig and find the 3 pull lanyards poking out the hole in the chassis frame in front of the passenger steer tire. Yes, the ones coated in dirt and maybe even grey primer paint so you cannot tell what color each of them are. Scrape some grime/primer of each loop to see the color hiding underneath and attach the corresponding carabiner to each.
  • Now, here is a tool that has multiple extensions so you can reach each of the colored carabiners without trying to crawl into the wheel well.
  • Now that you can actually see the color of each pull lanyard, we'll do this maintenance step once a month.
  • Air up the system to full air and then turn off the engine.
  • Now pull the lanyards one by one in this order: Silver, Green, and finally Red.
  • As you pull each of the lanyards, listen for spitting and sputtering followed by dry air. Hearing 5-6 seconds of spitting/sputtering is normal.
  • This helps to purge moisture from the air system; not doing this once a month can result in some rather costly repairs down the road as moisture is the worst enemy of your air system, which your coach relies on.
Attached are some photos of the installed carabiners and the tool he gave to each of us in the class.

Best,
-Mark
