Would the State Park you were thinking of be The Lost Dutchman State Park? Beautiful location. Not too far from Apache Junction and because it is rural it has nicely spaced sites.

there is a decent park on the northeast side of Phoenix that’s part of the casino there called Eagle View. Close to fountain hills which is a nice area for dining options.
