I am trying to help my retired parents. They recently purchased a new coleman rv.

It has a 30 amp hookup on it and I have had a couple issues that I'm trying to figure it all out.

It did not have a generator so I purchased a 4500 watt inverter generator by champion. It has a 30 amp power receptacle and should be able to provide a full 30 amps.

However we occasionally trip its breaker. It seams like we can not turn on the water heater at the same time as the ac. Is this normal? I can understand the microwave and ac could draw too much power.

I tried to start the ac first then the heater on to try to avoid the hard start of the ac. Maybe 90 seconds in the breaker will trip.

Could something be wrong with our rv?

Now you know why people with 30 amp trailers will heat the water using propane rather than electric during the summer. Even a 6 gallon water heater uses more amps than your microwave when actually heating the water. In cooler weather when the A/C isn't needed you can run the water heater on the electric side. BTW, your Champion inverter gen only has 30.4 running amps.

Here is a basic estimate of appliance draws
Note the A/C startup draw is much higher than running draw.

But running both the A/C and Water Heater is at or above your 30 amps.

If this is the Champion Generator you purchased note that the 4500 watt is start up peak, the generator run watts are 3500W.

You just don't have enough generator I'm afraid.
