More specifically, Dowdy Lake Campground.

We were there for three nights over the weekend. The sites are a mix of non-electric and electric (some 30 and some 50), with no water or sewer hookups. The nearest dump station is an hour away at the KOA in Fort Collins.

Anyway, I love this place, as do my wife and kids. The only real drawback is that you can’t swim in the lake. But given the number of fish hooks I’ve found along the shore, I wouldn’t want to.

We got some quality time in climbing the rocks around the lake, kayak fishing, walking, riding bikes, and nature watching. Highlights include watching a bald Eagle catch a fish.

My five-year old (to be six on Saturday!) caught his first two fish yesterday (Memorial Day).

Looks like a lot of fun! How rigid is the inflatable canoe? I have an intex excursion boat for the kids that's a bit floppy for my liking and a pair of inflatable canoes (or kayaks) would better suit us anyway. I like inexpensive but I'm willing to pay for something that will perform like I want.

This one is pretty solid. The company my wife worked at a couple of years ago had a bonus to be used on sports or fitness equipment or memberships, so we used it on this at REI. It’s almost as good as a hard shell kayak, but is much more portable.

Poking around, I found it at REI. It certainly meets my definition of expensive but you reminded me my wife has an annual stipend with the same usage requirments (likely many fortune 500 companies follow the same rules). Portability is high on my list of priorities as I'm still shopping and it'll be something very light that can be pulled with the minivan or a bit more comfortable and pulled with the truck while another vehicle has to follow to include everyone.

Considering that good hard shell boats can run into multiples of thousands of dollars, it’s not that bad. 😜

We were out Dowdy Lake again over this past weekend. The weather and fishing weren’t as good as last time, but much fun was had. Three of my kids’ friends came along too, so the kids were extra rambunctious.

Two sites over from last time. We stopped at the KOA in Fort Collins on the way home to dump, and I must say that I greatly prefer campgrounds over their setup, which looks like a trailer park.

We agree with you. We very very rarely stay at an RV park. We love the County, state, federal and Corp of Engineers campgrounds as well as BLM land. When traveling we use Harvest Host and Boondockers welcome
