I am looking at buying a used 40’ coach and i am curious about regisering and plating in montana
We are michigan residents and will be travelling mostly in mich but occasional trips out of state towing our mich plated car
Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or not
Mich taxes and plates are expensive
Thank you

Although this is always a contentious topic, Montana LLC registration for an RV can make sense if your RV spends very little time in your home State. We have a MT-registered MH and are SD residents. The MH is rarely in SD and, therefore, doesn't violate the State's rules about how long out of State vehicles can be present.

OTOH, if you do as you have proposed, you would be keeping the RV in Michigan most of the time which violates this principle and might result in some people thinking you were trying to evade your home State's taxes. :(

I have heard some say no problem and others say no way

If you have a very aggressive tax advisor, you might want to consider the argument that "you" aren't the person keeping the RV in Michigan, rather, it's the RV's owner, the LLC. But, since the LLC's place of business is in MT, it would have to be sued in MT for taxes owed. In other words, they couldn't sue you in Michigan court because you aren't the owner.

Again, IMO this position is best taken by those with deep pockets and aggressive tax advisors!

We are full time in an RV. Our prior sticks and bricks was FL. We are maintaining our domicile as FL.
There is a Montana LLC that owns an RV that we use.
We spend less than 2 months a year in FL and no more than 25% of a year in any given state.
I have heard that some states can be very aggressive, check with your legal advisors for your situation.

Do you own property in Michigan? If so, a MT LLC is not for you. If you don't own property in MI, you need to check the laws to see when you can bring the coach into Montana without risking sales tax. For instance, I am a fulltimer. My domicile is Florida. I do not own property anywhere. As long as I don't bring my coach registered under a MT LLC into Florida for 6 months, I avoid the sales tax. I am not evading it. There is a big difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance.

Action Services in Missoula Mt. I use them, there great! Just tell them Kenny K sent you! Call them and they will explain everything you need to know. Google them

While Montana doesn't seem to have a problem with out of staters registering their vehicles here (they get your money), your home state might have a big problem if they find out, as they are losing revenue.

We just paid several thousand in taxes for the coach we bought last month. We prefer to sleep well at night. Not even THINKING about what others choose to do - that’s a slippery slope.
