If you live where it freezes a lot in the winter, I am a pro cover guy. If water gets into even a tiny crack in the roof will let a couple of drops in, It will swell when it freezes. The water will melt (the next day if its sunny?), and a bit more will get into the crack. The process continues, the crack keeps getting bigger.

Granite boulders get cracked in half from this process in the north country over a period of years. Probably best to keep the water off the roof if you can do it.

This is me, but I'm a believer in keeping vehicles under cover so a carport was part of the budget when we bought our RV. I would never leave one out in the open regardless of the climate.
