They’ve been sensing def level and temp since 2012, or maybe 2011. In 2016 they added the “DEF quality” sensor that reads the % urea in the DEF. The combined sensors make up the DEF head(er). I’ve read varying reports on the sensitivity of the quality sensor, but it seems anything between 32% and 33% is considered good. They did this because apparently pre-2016 you can run distilled water (don’t quote me on this) in your DEF tank and get away with it. The problem is that the quality sensor is highly prone to failure and it is responsible for the majority of DEF related failures and unnecessary derates. When did they start using thedef head sensor?
