At the Hoots Rally, my stairs decided they were done working right in the middle of changing sites. Luckily, plenty of kind Newmar owners jumped in to help. Big thanks to @24thrd for figuring it out, Steve Showalter for crawling underneath, and @GlampDaddy along with a few others for stopping by with advice and encouragement.
I knew it wasn’t a hydraulic issue since there was power, but the stairs wouldn’t retract. The next day, I noticed the stair lights didn’t come on when I opened the door, only when I turned on the patio light. That led the guys to suspect the stairs weren’t sensing the door opening or closing.
There’s a magnet in the door that triggers the stairs. Luckily, I had some strong magnets with me (from my Alaska trip, don’t ask). 24thrd used one to test the connection, and the stairs retracted right away. He found the original magnet had shifted out of place, and once it was moved back, everything worked perfectly again.
Sharing this in case it helps someone else down the road. Below is a link for the magnet set I happened to have with me, and it worked great in a pinch.
