Question Stuck access panel - what's it for?

Just bought a 1995 Tioga Montara. This access panel in the back is either stuck closed or the key has been lost. The previous owner was never able to open it either.

Looking for (a) tips on how to open it without breaking anything, and (b) anybody know what would be in there? The floorplan is such that the bathroom is in that corner.

Look closely at the lock - there should be a number stamped on the surface somewhere. It's most likely a CH751 - the world's most common lock/key. If the key slot is vertical it's most likely locked; if it's horizontal it's unlocked. Once you get it unlocked you might have to use some muscle to separate the weatherproofing gasket to actually get it open.

Thanks - I just checked and don't see a number stamped anywhere. Would it be reasonable to assume that it's supposed to take the same key as the other hatches? That key will go in but won't turn (it is in the vertical locked position).

The locks are inexpensive and easy to remove. Drill through the key slot, remove then replace.

If this is a Factory Installed lock it is probably a 751. Have you tried lubricant?

Or you can try to Pick the lock, if the pins move. Even a novice can open one of these in minutes if the pins move.

OR if you prefer the 'just get it done" method. Drill it.
