Looking for a used RV soon and wondering if the gas driven Class As could pull a 5000 lb vehicle on sustained inclines like crossing the Appalachian Mountains? Or should I simply rule out gas and look for a diesel? Can any of the diesels offered in the early 2000s sustain 50mph under these conditions? Thank you!

Gas - yes it can do it but slowly 35mph or so.

Early 2000 DPs, yes but depends on incline. At 9% or more, even a modern DP is going to struggle pulling 5k at 50mph, assuming it’s fully loaded.

Very help and confirms what I was concerned about. Do you think the Chevy 8.1L pulls better than the Ford V10?

Couldn’t tell you honestly. I drive a DP.
