I just bought a new truck to tow my travel trailer with but we were using my wifes Tahoe to tow it. her receiver is 23" to the center of it but my truck is 20" to the center. Do I have to readjust the hitch or can I use it with the difference so as to be able to use either truck?

I assume you are referring to height above ground with the two hitch receivers. If so, go with the hitch adjustment height that results in the trailer being level and use a drop/rise adapter on the other vehicle. That will make them both the same height.

I agree with TJ. Set the hitch to where the truck AND trailer are towing level.

The hitch that goes into the receiver also has the attachments for the bars that stabilize and stop the sway not easy just using drop down adapter

With a 3” height difference between the two vehicles, I suppose you could adjust the hitch so that it splits the difference. An inch-and-a-half above/below level probably won’t make a lot of different. I still don’t follow why using a drop adapter would be any different than using the bare receiver, but I’ll take your word for it. Seems like whatever plugs into the bare receiver would also plug into the receiver on the adapter. YMMV

My cargo trailer literature asks for 21" to top of ball. Sounds like the truck is spot on. I am in agreement with the above posts, with one deviation, I would favor the truck at maybe 21. If the hitch uses chains connecting the spring bars, I would make up the difference there.
