I'd put on some Italian tunes and channel your inner Italy. Pasta seems like a good option before getting into crispy or meats as you have to protect the plumbing. How about spaghetti with white clam sauce? One of my all time favorites. Chased with some Lasagna? Heck, go to Italy for a week or two...you deserve it. Get outside "the box" for a bit :)

I assume you may need some protein. I love this stuff and it comes in all flavors. Chocolate Malt is one of my favs along with strawberry creme I think it is.

And so, I’m considering my first real meal in more than a month., assuming my teeth will remember what to do. I want it to be awesome without doing damage to my surgeon’s good work. I love many types of food, with Mexican high on my list. And brisket! And fried chicken and chicken fried steak and chicken wings. And beef, bison, venison, elk and other meats that usually require red wine. I’m salivating like some sort of maniac here!

Anyone?
I'm always a vote in the direction of brisket!

According to AI:

What to eat
  • Soups and broths:
Choose smooth or pureed soups without large chunks, and avoid overly hot beverages.

  • Dairy:
Yogurt, cottage cheese, and milkshakes are excellent sources of protein and calcium.

    • Protein:
Scrambled eggs, soft fish (like baked or steamed fish), and tender ground or minced meats are good options.
    • Fruits:
Applesauce, canned fruits, ripe bananas, and ripe avocados are easy to eat. Smoothies are a good way to get nutrients, but avoid fruits with small seeds like strawberries or raspberries.
    • Vegetables:
Mashed potatoes (without skin), cooked carrots, and well-cooked vegetables without tough skins or seeds are suitable.
    • Grains:
Oatmeal, cream of wheat, and refined pasta are good choices.
    • Desserts:
Pudding, Jell-O, and soft ice cream can be comforting and are easy to consume.
    • Other:
Protein shakes can be helpful for getting extra protein, especially when blended with soft fruits.

I would seek out some casserole recipes that are saucy. And loaded with flavor. Then blend up and enjoy with a small spoon. Of course, warmed, if that is allowed.

It could be turkey/chicken tetrazzini, hong kong chow mein with veggies, hearty lasagna, rice/meat/cheese meat thickened soups.

Update on Buddy (Now With Upgraded Plumbing)

Wanted to give everyone an update on Buddy, who recently discovered that getting older isn’t for sissies and apparently not for people with improperly behaving esophagi either.

A while back he told us he’d been wrestling with a “mystery issue.” After enough tests to qualify him for frequent-flyer miles at the hospital, the doctors finally figured it out. Turns out he had a diverticulum, which is a fancy medical term for a side pocket his esophagus decided to grow without asking permission. This little pouch was catching his food, drink, and, most tragically, his Eagle Rare, refusing to pass any of it down the line to the stomach.

To make matters worse, the actual path from the pouch to the stomach had narrowed down to something roughly the size of the driveway at a poorly designed RV park. So instead of operating like a normal digestive system, his esophagus was basically running a traffic jam.

After reviewing the scans, the doctors unanimously agreed on a treatment plan: “Yep… that needs fixing.”

So Buddy went in for surgery on the 10th. It turned out to be a little more involved than the doctors first thought, apparently his internal architecture had made some design choices that didn’t appear in the original blueprints, but from what I understand, the surgical team got everything repaired:
  • The pouch has been handled
  • The passage is now open
  • And hopefully the entire system will meet or exceed factory specifications
Buddy came through the procedure well, and recovery is going smoothly. If everything keeps trending the right direction, he should be released tomorrow, presumably before he starts critiquing the hospital’s menu or asking where they hide the bourbon.

I’ll pass along more updates as he continues healing, but for now, he’s doing well and appreciates everyone keeping him in their thoughts.

And yes… we fully expect his first test drink to be measured with scientific precision. For research, of course.
Thank you for the update. Great write up!
