I can see where it would be useful in holding together a battery pack, (like the capacitor demonstration), and in packaging for shipping. Bundle some thing a bit long and thin together, wrap and shrink. Keeps it as one piece until the recipient puts a utility knife to the wrap.
Still, it's a bunch cheaper to just by the stretch wrap and hand wrapper, than scrounge up PET bottles to use.
