Has anyone experienced water damage/rot to area behind mirror mount - how did you correct the problem??

I am assuming you are talking about having delamination? The first thing is to find where the water leak is and fix it. Then you can fix the delamination by using apoxy. There are delamination repair kits on Amazon. You would inject the apoxy behind the fiberglass then apply pressure for about 24 hrs. For you you may be able to inject the apoxy by removing the mirror.

There are a few YouTube videos that show the process.

Remove the mirror. You'll find a hole in the side wall where cables for the mirror are fed through to under dash. Inspect the cut for evidence of water ingress. If delamination is evident, a bar clamp, through the mirror wire harness hole, can be used with the delam kit to apply pressure. Reinstall mirror with ample butyl tape, not silicone.
