Question Water Softener brown water?

Recently I have noticed that when water is run through the On the Go water softener, after it has sat for a few weeks, the water is brownish. Almost a rust color. This color clears after the softener is flushed for a minute or so. Also, I store the softener as empty of water as possible to keep weight down.

Any thoughts as to the cause?

Mine will push brown water when doing a backflush. Will have to check during next hookup in March if it flushes brown. We don't empty the softener between stops (we're full timers)
