FYI Chevy Sonic burst into flames

Scary $hit! That's why I recharge the Lithium batteries for out e bikes far away from our motorhome.

I don't think the Sonic is an EV...


I had a co-workers BMW 3-series do that, turned out to be a bic lighter he left on the dash board, 90° outside, the glass heated the bic, the bic exploded, the car went up in flames.

hmmm...I thought that the Sonic was an EV. Guess I could be wrong...BUT, that comment about charging the E-Bike close to the motorhome got my attention. I plug ours into our bay outlet so they are (say) about a foot or two away. Not a good idea ? What's the solution ? Long extension cord ?

no the Sonic is a ICE vehicle.

as for the EV's I have 3, I use smart chargers on them and have never had an issue.

smart chargers monitor the battery and provide Over voltage Protection, Over Current Protection, Short Circuit Protection, Reverse Protection, and overheating protection

The Chevy Sonic is built in Michigan at the acquired Dawoo plant. it is the replacement subcompact for the Aveo, a disaster for GM.
It is an ICE vehicle. GM Stopped producing these in 2020.
A nice subcompact when they are not spontaneously combusting.
I believe it was the only subcompact built in the US.

A lithium battery does not need to be on a charger to fail and ignite. Airlines now carry fire proof bags designed to contain a lithium battery fire just in case a phone or a laptop decides to burst into flames.

Strange how incidents like this aren’t considered news worthy because it was an internal combustion engine. But if it had been a battery car, then it would be news worthy.

Where / how / do you guys charge your E-Bikes while traveling ? Or are you not worried about it ? Just curious...blessings

Pardon my ignorance. I thought its was an e car as well. For sure it is a gasser.
I have a twelve foot extension attached to a timer set for four hours. I usually set them up on the far end of the picnic table. Four hours has been enough to fully charge both batteries so far (we have two bikes). Our batteries are detachable so they are stored in the back of the Jeep when not in use. I won't have them in the coach. If the Jeep burns it isn't that big of a deal. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid but one hears these horror stories.

you should invest in a lipo charging/storage bag/box

there are a lot out there, find one that fits your batteries. safest way to store them.
